Panic Buttons Installed in 39 Women’s Colleges and Universities
The Punjab government has rolled out a major women’s safety initiative in Lahore, with panic buttons now installed in 39 women’s colleges and universities. The project, implemented by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is designed to give female students quick and reliable access to help during emergencies.
Under the system, panic buttons are linked to the PSCA’s central control room. Once pressed, an alert is instantly transmitted to the Virtual Women Police Station, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement teams. Officials explained that this mechanism ensures that help reaches students even in situations where mobile phones may not be accessible, such as during sudden threats, harassment incidents, or accidents.
This initiative marks the first phase of a much larger plan. According to the PSCA spokesperson, the system will be expanded to more than 450 women’s colleges and universities across Punjab in the coming months. Authorities believe this step will not only improve emergency response times but also boost students’ confidence in pursuing education in a safe environment.
Currently, panic buttons are already operational at 122 public locations in Lahore and 101 across other major cities. However, expanding the technology to academic institutions represents a landmark move in the province’s strategy to strengthen public safety infrastructure.
The PSCA added that the project reflects Punjab’s growing reliance on technology-driven solutions to address security challenges. By combining surveillance, digital reporting, and real-time police response, officials aim to create a secure ecosystem for women across the province.
Students and parents have welcomed the initiative, noting that the presence of panic buttons in classrooms and campuses offers an additional layer of protection. Many believe the project will deter potential incidents of harassment and reassure families who send their daughters to study in Lahore’s institutions.
