In a significant move to boost their bilateral cooperation, Pakistan and China have recently signed six agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs). The signing ceremony, which took place in Islamabad on Monday, was attended by Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, and the visiting Chinese Vice Premier, He Lifeng.
One of the crucial agreements signed was related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, and the vice chairman of China’s National Development and Reforms Commission signed the document on the joint cooperation committee of the CPEC. The CPEC is a flagship project that aims to enhance connectivity and promote economic development between the two countries.
Another important document signed was focused on the establishment of an experts exchange mechanism within the framework of the CPEC. This mechanism will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise, further strengthening cooperation in various fields.
The third agreement pertained to the export of dried chilli from Pakistan to China. This will open up new avenues for Pakistan’s agricultural sector and promote trade opportunities between the two nations.
Additionally, the fourth document signed was related to the realignment of the Karakoram Highway Phase II project feasibility study. The Karakoram Highway is a vital link that connects Pakistan and China, and its realignment will improve transportation infrastructure and enhance trade between the two countries.
Furthermore, the two sides also signed a memorandum of understanding on the Industrial Workers’ Exchange Program. This program aims to foster better understanding and cooperation between the industrial workers of both nations.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the signed agreements were aimed at boosting economic relations between Pakistan and China. He highlighted the tremendous investments made by China in Pakistan’s power and hydel sector, road infrastructure, and public transport, amounting to over $25 billion under the CPEC.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister stated that the two countries are entering the second phase of the CPEC, which will focus on investments in sectors like agriculture and information technology. This will bring further progress and development to both nations and will align with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s vision of a shared destiny of progress and prosperity.
Prime Minister Sharif praised the strong and unique relationship between Pakistan and China, describing them as “all-weather friends” and “iron brothers.” He reaffirmed that this friendship will continue to flourish and overcome any challenges that may arise.
The Prime Minister expressed confidence in successfully achieving major projects like the ML-1 and Karachi Circular Railway. These projects hold immense importance and will contribute significantly to Pakistan’s development and self-sufficiency. He expressed Pakistan’s willingness to learn from the Chinese model of development to achieve peace and prosperity within the country.
