North Korean Balloons Carrying Trash Land Near South Korea’s Presidential Office

On Wednesday, the Presidential Security Service reported that balloons from North Korea carrying trash had landed near South Korea’s presidential office. The trash was found around the government complex in the Yongsan area. According to the security service, the objects in the balloons posed no contaminants or other risks.

Since May, North Korea has periodically sent hundreds of balloons filled with trash across the heavily fortified border. This prompted South Korea’s military to restart loudspeaker broadcasts targeting the North. North Korea claims it is retaliating against a propaganda campaign by defectors and activists in the South, who regularly send balloons with anti-Pyongyang leaflets, food, medicine, money, and USB sticks loaded with K-pop videos and dramas.

South Korea’s military confirmed that North Korea had sent another batch of trash-laden balloons earlier on Wednesday. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JUS) said the balloons, influenced by the current westerly wind direction, were moving towards the northern part of Gyeonggi province.

Since 2022, South Korea’s presidential office has been located in Yongsan, a central district in Seoul. This move was made by President Yoon Suk Yeol, breaking with decades of tradition by moving out of the more secluded Blue House.
