At least nine people, including a child, were killed, and around 50 others were injured when part of a stage collapsed at an election rally in Mexico’s northern Nuevo León state, as confirmed by the local governor.
The incident happened during a speech by centre-left presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez in the city of San Pedro Garza Garcia, near Monterrey. Maynez himself was unharmed, but several members of his team were injured.
Maynez explained that the collapse was caused by a sudden gust of wind, which came without warning. Videos circulating on social media showed the moment the structure collapsed, with people screaming and running for safety.
Describing the event, Maynez said he noticed the musicians’ drums being blown away, prompting him and others to react quickly and move away from the collapsing structure.
The victims included eight adults and one child, according to State Governor Samuel Garcia. Three of the injured required surgery. Following the incident, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent condolences to the families of the victims and supporters of the rally.
Maynez, 38, is the candidate of the Citizens’ Movement party, currently trailing in third place in national polls. The original candidate, Samuel Garcia, nominated Maynez after a dispute over candidacy requirements.
In response to the tragedy, Maynez announced the suspension of upcoming campaign events, while other candidates, such as Claudia Sheinbaum and Xóchitl Gálvez, expressed condolences and canceled appearances out of respect.
The lead-up to the election, scheduled for 2 June, has been marked by violence, with around 200 public servants, politicians, and candidates reportedly murdered or threatened, according to a recent survey. However, there have been no reported incidents at campaign events.
