New Starbucks CEO Faces Criticism for 1,000-Mile Commute on Company Jet

Starbucks’ newly appointed CEO, Brian Niccol, is facing criticism after it was revealed that he will be commuting nearly 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from his home in Newport Beach, California, to the company’s headquarters in Seattle using a corporate jet.

Critics on social media have pointed out a perceived contradiction between Starbucks’ public commitment to environmental issues and the lifestyle of its top executive. Niccol is set to start his role as CEO of the world’s largest coffee chain on September 9.

According to Niccol’s job offer, he is not required to relocate to Seattle but will commute from his residence. The offer also states that he will have access to the company’s aircraft for business-related travel and commuting between his home and the headquarters. Additionally, Starbucks will establish a small remote office in Newport Beach for Niccol to use while working from California. A 2021 United Nations report indicated that the wealthiest 1% of people contribute twice the combined carbon emissions of the poorest 50%.

These employment terms have sparked a backlash online. Starbucks has a hybrid work policy that requires its employees to be in the office at least three days a week.

Concerns have also been raised about Niccol’s compensation. His annual base salary is set at $1.6 million (£1.2 million), with potential bonuses of up to $7.2 million and up to $23 million in Starbucks shares. Former US Secretary of Labor Robert Reich questioned why CEO pay is rarely discussed in the context of rising prices.

This month, Starbucks announced Niccol’s appointment as the new CEO, replacing Laxman Narasimhan. The move comes as the coffee chain aims to improve its declining sales.
