NEPRA okays increase in power tariff for KE consumers

KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Friday permitted K-Electric (KE) to impose an additional charge of Re0.58 per unit on consumers in April as a fuel charge adjustment (FCA).

The KE had requested an increase of Rs1.66 per unit, which was evaluated during a public hearing by the regulator on March 30. NEPRA issued a notification on Friday stating that the increase in tariff approved as FCA for February would be included in consumers’ bills for April, with the exception of lifeline consumers and electric vehicle charging station users.

This decision will help KE to receive more than Rs750 million. In January, KE consumers paid an FCA of Rs1.71 per unit. This latest tariff increase adds to the woes of citizens already grappling with record inflation and an escalating cost of living crisis. NEPRA okayed power distribution companies (Discos) and KE to recover the fuel adjustment surcharges from the consumers in the 8 months.

Discos will collect different amounts from various categories, while KE will recover the deferred fuel adjustment surcharge up to Rs13.87 per unit from its consumers in a similar fashion. The entire amount will be collected from electricity consumers in monthly installments from March to October 2023.
