Nepal Lifts TikTok Ban After Nearly a Year, Following Assurances from the Company

Nepal has lifted its ban on TikTok, less than a year after blocking the Chinese-owned app over concerns about its impact on “social harmony.” The decision was announced on Thursday by Minister for Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung following a cabinet meeting.

This change comes after Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, who took office last month after the previous coalition government collapsed, issued a directive calling for equal treatment of all social networking platforms. The state-run National News Agency reported that the decision followed discussions between the Nepalese government and TikTok, which is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance. TikTok assured the government that it would comply with all legal requirements, promote digital safety, and create a dedicated channel for content-related requests from authorities.

TikTok expressed satisfaction with the ban being lifted. A spokesperson for the company stated, “The creativity and passion of our community have brought joy to households across Nepal and opened vital economic opportunities for talented creators and businesses. We’re excited to continue supporting Nepali voices and creativity as we work together to contribute to Nepal’s success story.”

The previous ban was implemented in November by the government of former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, citing concerns over content that allegedly “disturbs social harmony and disrupts family structures and social relations.”

TikTok, one of the world’s most popular social media platforms with over a billion monthly users, has faced restrictions in many countries due to concerns about its influence on young people and potential national security risks. In 2020, India, Nepal’s neighbor, banned TikTok and several other Chinese-developed apps after violent clashes along the India-China border.

Recently, the United States Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against TikTok, accusing the platform of violating laws that require parental consent to collect personal information from users under 13.
