National Institute of Health Receives 100 Nipah Virus Testing Kits Amid Precautionary Measures

The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Pakistan has acquired 100 specialized testing kits for the detection of the Nipah virus, authorities confirmed on Thursday, January 29, 2026. Health officials emphasized that these measures are precautionary, as there is currently no confirmed case of the Nipah virus in the country.

A high-level meeting on the matter, chaired by Health Secretary Hamid Yaqoob, highlighted the NIH’s readiness to handle suspected cases. It was decided that any samples from suspected Nipah virus patients will be sent to the NIH for immediate confirmation. The move comes as part of proactive measures to prevent the spread of the virus and ensure rapid diagnosis in case of an outbreak.

Officials further stated that the Sindh Health Department has issued a public alert regarding the Nipah virus. Screening protocols have been strengthened at all land and air entry points across Pakistan, with 100 percent monitoring of incoming travelers. Authorities are checking travel history for the past 21 days and keeping a close watch on individuals deemed high-risk. Special attention is being given to symptoms such as fever, respiratory issues, and neurological signs, which could indicate infection.

In addition, suspected patients will be isolated immediately and shifted to designated isolation units to prevent any potential transmission. Provincial health departments have been instructed to identify hospitals equipped to treat Nipah virus cases and ensure the presence of trained medical staff for emergency response.

The NIH reiterated that there is no confirmed case of Nipah virus in Pakistan at this time. However, the acquisition of testing kits and the establishment of strict monitoring and isolation protocols reflect the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring preparedness against emerging infectious diseases.

These proactive steps aim to reassure the public while strengthening Pakistan’s capacity to respond swiftly should any cases arise, ensuring that the country is equipped to manage potential health threats efficiently.
