- Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi will appear in NAB on June 7 in a $190 million case.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has summoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, for investigations related to a £190 million settlement case. The case involves the transfer of funds from Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) account.
Bushra Bibi, the former first lady, has been requested by NAB Rawalpindi to record her testimony as a witness owing to her position as a trustee of the Al-Qadir University Trust. The anti-graft watchdog’s joint investigative team (CIT) has called former prime minister Imran Khan. Imran Khan has been given a questionnaire to complete by June 7 after the CIT voiced displeasure with his earlier response.
According to legal requirements, NAB must clarify whether the individuals being summoned are considered as accused or witnesses. The CIT has already recorded statements from ministers of the previous government and has requested records of all donations received from the Al-Qadir University Trust and its donors.
Imran Khan was granted bail until June 19 in the corruption case by an accountability court after the Islamabad High Court directed him to seek bail from the relevant forum. NAB officials informed the court that the arrest of Bushra Bibi was not necessary, but she should cooperate with the anti-graft body during the investigation.
Background of the Case
The son of a well-known Pakistani real estate billionaire and his wife had an account with £140 million, which the British authorities found in 2019. The funds were frozen by the NCA due to suspicions of criminal origins. The UK returned the laundered funds to Pakistan in 2019 after following appropriate legal procedures.
The case was presented to Pakistan’s federal cabinet in December 2019 for discussion on the return of the funds. The settlement was approved by Imran Khan without allowing his cabinet members to read it, according to a source familiar with the investigation.
As part of the settlement agreement, the property tycoon offered a compensation package, including the transfer of land and cash amounting to Rs285 million to the Al-Qadir Trust. The trustees of the trust included Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and his senior advisers Zulfi Bukhari and Babar Awan.
