KARACHI – In a landmark development for the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Murtaza Wahab has been elected as the Mayor of Karachi. According to unofficial sources, Wahab secured an impressive 173 votes, while his opponent, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman of Jamaat-e-Islami, received 161 votes.
The voting process for the election of Karachi’s new mayor commenced earlier in the day, with elected members of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) City Council participating in the proceedings.
The contest was closely fought, with Murtaza Wahab representing the PPP and Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman from Jamaat-e-Islami. Additionally, Salman Abdullah Murad of the PPP and Saifuddin Advocate of JI were contesting for the position of deputy mayor.
Upon learning of the victory, Asif Ali Zardari, the co-chairperson of the PPP, extended his congratulations to Murtaza Wahab and all the mayors and deputy mayors of Sindh. Zardari attributed their success to the hard work of party workers and emphasized the importance of elected representatives keeping their offices accessible to the public.
The election process took place at the Arts Council Auditorium, which served as a designated polling station for the mayor’s election. To ensure transparency and prevent any disturbances, members were required to present proper identification and were prohibited from carrying mobile phones inside the premises.
Voting was conducted through a show of hands within the auditorium, while private media outlets were not permitted to cover the polling process. However, the initial proceedings were broadcasted on state TV, excluding the display of the show of hands.
In addition to the election of the mayor, the chairman and vice-chairman positions for nine Town Municipal Corporations were also decided on the same day. Notably, the candidates for chairman and vice-chairman in 11 towns were elected without opposition.
It is worth mentioning that in 16 out of the 25 Town Municipal Corporations of Karachi, the PPP emerged victorious by securing eight seats. Jamaat-e-Islami won six seats, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) claimed two seats uncontested.
The PPP’s unopposed victories occurred in Gadap Town, Malir Town, Ibrahim Hydari Town in the Malir District, Lyari Town in the South District, Manghopir Town in the West District, Baldia Town in Kemari District, Morero Mir Bahar Town, and Maripur Town.
Jamaat-e-Islami secured uncontested wins for chairman and vice-chairman positions in Landhi Town, Model Colony Town of Korangi District, North Nazimabad Town, Gulberg Town, Liaquatabad Town, and Nazimabad Town of the Central District.
Furthermore, PTI emerged victorious without opposition in Saddar Town in the South District and Shah Faisal Town in the Korangi District.
Murtaza Wahab‘s election as Karachi Mayor marks a significant milestone for the PPP, as he becomes the first candidate from the party to assume this position. This victory not only highlights the party’s strong support in the city but also showcases the trust placed in Wahab’s leadership abilities and his commitment to serving the people of Karachi.
