Pakistan Cricket Board brings back former coach Mickey Arthur as consultant
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing to appoint former head coach Mickey Arthur as a consultant for the Pakistan cricket team. This comes ahead of their upcoming series against New Zealand, set to start on April 14 in Lahore.
In an exclusive interview with Cricket Pakistan, PCB management committee chairman Najam Sethi revealed that two foreign coaches have already arrived in Lahore, with Arthur scheduled to arrive on April 18. Arthur will take charge for one or two matches in the upcoming series, with his primary focus being to prepare the team, train them, and brief them on his plans for the future.
Sethi spoke about his preference for foreign coaching staff for the national team, citing their ability to stay away from politics and their professionalism as key factors. He believes that in Pakistani culture, friendships carry too much weight in decision-making, which can be detrimental to professional cricket at the highest level. Sethi emphasized the importance of embracing professional ethics and the need for foreign coaches to maintain this standard.
Mickey Arthur, a South African-born former cricketer, has had a long and successful coaching career in international cricket. He previously served as the head coach of the Pakistan cricket team from 2016 to 2019, leading them to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy victory. Prior to that, he coached the South African and Australian national teams.
The appointment of Arthur as a consultant is expected to bring stability and strategic planning to the Pakistan cricket team, which has struggled in recent years. The team has experienced a revolving door of coaches and captains, and their performance on the field has been inconsistent.
This move comes as the PCB has also announced the appointment of a new captain for the Pakistan cricket team, with Babar Azam taking over the reins from Azhar Ali. Azam, a top-order batsman, is widely regarded as one of the best players in the world and has shown tremendous potential in his career so far. He will be looking to lead the team with a fresh approach and bring success to the national side.
The upcoming series against New Zealand is an opportunity for the Pakistan cricket team to show their potential and turn things around. The team has a strong lineup of players, including Mohammad Rizwan, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, and Fakhar Zaman. They will need to play as a cohesive unit and execute their plans effectively to come out on top against a tough New Zealand side.
