Meta Says It Will Remove Posts Attacking ‘Zionists’

Meta announced a new policy on Tuesday regarding the use of the term “Zionist” on its platforms. The company, which owns Facebook and Instagram, will now remove posts containing “Zionist” if it includes antisemitic stereotypes or dehumanizing language.

This decision comes after Meta conducted a thorough investigation into how the term has been historically used and its current usage, especially in relation to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

According to Meta’s blog post, their existing policies did not adequately address the ways in which people use “Zionist” online and offline. Moving forward, Meta will take down content that attacks “Zionists” when it involves antisemitic stereotypes or incites harm or violence against Jews or Israelis, even if it’s disguised as criticism against Zionism.

Meta stated in a blog post that they will now delete content that dehumanizes “Zionists” through comparisons, calls for harm, or denials of their existence. They explained that in many cases, “Zionist” is used as a substitute for Jewish or Israeli individuals.

Additionally, Meta has requested guidance from its oversight board on how to handle posts accusing groups labeled with “proxy terms for nationality (including Zionists)” of committing war crimes.
