LUMS students hold ‘fake shaadi’, video goes viral

Pakistani students of LUMS University organised a simulated wedding event, known as ‘shaadi’, which has taken the social media by storm.

Renowned for its research-intensive approach and guided by the philosophy of ‘Learning Without Borders’, LUMS is the leading university in Pakistan that excels in teaching. Its integrated curriculum unites various disciplines to address the significant challenges faced by South Asia and beyond. The students of LUMS are recognised for their creativity and innovative events, which often make headlines.

The mock shaadi event, dubbed as the “Batch Shaadi of 2023”, featured all the customary events that are part of a real wedding, such as dholki, mehendi, baarat, ruskhsati, and walima. The make-believe wedding ceremony featured a pretend bride, groom, and guests, all donned in fancy wedding attire. Various students took on different roles and played characters such as the in-laws, qazi sahab, and a typical stern brown dad. The students Mahnoor and Taimoor portrayed the roles of the bride and groom.

According to Twitter users, two senior students were chosen to play the roles of the bride and groom during the annual fake ‘shaadi’ event. This unique event allowed students to experience the fun of a wedding without the added pressure of actual marriage obligations.

This tradition is held annually at LUMS and the students left no stone unturned to make it an extravagant affair. While some found the mock shaadi harmless fun and a wholesome experience, while others criticised it for promoting an unhealthy fixation with the institution of marriage.
