‘Laziest citizen’ contest keeps seven Montenegrins lying for days

In an annual event that tickles the funny bone, seven participants are vying for the prestigious title of the “laziest citizen” in northern Montenegro. The competition, hosted in Brezna, aims to playfully challenge the stereotype that Montenegrins are inherently laid-back.

Last year’s record for lying down was an impressive 117 hours. However, this year’s contest has stretched into its 20th day, with the remaining contenders showing remarkable determination.

All participants report excellent health, with no major issues, as they receive pampering care throughout the event. Their only task is to remain in a reclined position, with standing or sitting resulting in immediate disqualification.

Contestants are allowed a mere 10 minutes every eight hours for restroom breaks and can engage in activities such as reading or using electronic devices to pass the time.

The brainchild behind this humorous contest is Radonja Blagojevic, and it has been held for 12 years now, poking fun at the stereotype that Montenegrins are a laid-back bunch.

Among the seven finalists is Dubravka Aksic, who claimed the title of reigning champion in 2021. Aksic, who is 38 years old, shared that all the participants feel great, and their well-being is well taken care of.

Originally, 21 contenders began the competition, but only these seven remain. Collectively, they have astonishingly accumulated a total of 463 hours of reclined endurance.

One newcomer to the contest, 23-year-old Filip Knezevic from the northern town of Mojkovac, radiates confidence and hopes to secure the 1,000-euro prize. Knezevic speaks highly of the fantastic company and the surprisingly swift passage of time in this unique contest.

This light-hearted event continues to captivate both participants and spectators, injecting a delightful touch of humor into the cultural landscape of the region.
