Lahore jail allows video calls between prisoners and family

Lahore Jail has taken a remarkable step towards improving the lives of its inmates by introducing a new video calling facility. This groundbreaking pilot project allows prisoners to communicate with their families and loved ones through video calls, bringing them closer despite the physical barriers.

Before this initiative, prisoners often felt disconnected from their families, leading to feelings of isolation and despair. However, with the new video calling system in place, things have changed for the better. Initially, 100 young inmates, who have not yet reached adulthood, have been given the opportunity to have video calls with their families twice a week.

The very first video call was made by Shakeel Ahmad Mian, the Additional Chief Secretary Home, highlighting the government’s dedication to prisoner welfare. This move is a significant milestone in improving the overall well-being of inmates, as it allows them to maintain a sense of connection and support during their time behind bars.

It is worth noting that this is the first time such a facility has been introduced in the country’s history, making it even more remarkable. The Inspector General of Jails expressed his optimism about the positive impact that video calling will have on prisoners’ lives. The success of this pilot project has paved the way for expanding video calling facilities to other jails in Punjab.

In fact, in April 2023, the caretaker Punjab Chief Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, conducted a meeting to discuss prison reforms, with a special focus on the proposal to conduct trials of prisoners through video links. This indicates the government’s commitment to utilizing technology to improve the justice system and ensure a fair and efficient legal process for all.

The introduction of video calling in Lahore Jail is a testament to the power of innovation in bringing positive changes to society. By fostering better communication and emotional support, this initiative is likely to contribute to the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners into society once they have served their sentences.
