Ukrainian Government Shake-Up as Key Ministers Resign Amid Intensifying War Efforts

Several top Ukrainian officials, including members of the cabinet, have resigned in anticipation of a significant government reshuffle. These resignations have left important positions vacant, including the role of Strategic Industries Minister, who was responsible for overseeing weapons production.

The shake-up comes as the leader of the ruling Servant of the People party in parliament announced that half of the cabinet would be replaced this week. This change is happening while Ukraine is dealing with daily Russian attacks on its cities and trying to prevent Russian forces from making gains in the east, all while also committing resources to an incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.

On Tuesday, those who resigned included Alexander Kamyshin, the Strategic Industries Minister; Denys Maliuska, the Justice Minister; Ruslan Strilets, the Environmental Protection Minister; Deputy Prime Ministers Olha Stefanishyna and Iryna Vereshchuk; and Vitaliy Koval, the head of Ukraine’s State Property Fund; Rostyslav Shurma, one of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s top aides.

In his nightly video address, President Zelensky stated that state institutions need to be adjusted so that Ukraine can achieve all necessary results. This comes ahead of his planned visit to the United States next month, where he is expected to present a “victory plan” to President Joe Biden. Zelensky added, “To achieve this, we must strengthen certain areas of the government, and changes in its structure have been prepared. There will also be changes in the president’s office.”

Opposition MP Iryna Gerashchenko criticized the reshuffle, describing it as “a government without ministers and a parliament without a majority.” She pointed out an “intellectual and personnel crisis” that she believes the authorities are ignoring. Gerashchenko called for a unity government and an end to President Zelensky’s political team’s hold on power.

51 people were killed and 271 injured in a Russian attack on the central city of Poltava on the same day these changes were announced. President Zelensky promised that Russia would pay for this attack and repeated his calls for more air defense systems from Western allies to protect Ukraine from Russian aggression.

President Zelensky has made several changes to his government since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Currently, at least five key government positions, including those for infrastructure and agriculture, remain vacant due to previous resignations or dismissals.
