Hundreds of workers at Kenya’s main international airport held a demonstration on Wednesday against a proposed deal between the government and a foreign company.
Passengers at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have been stranded since Tuesday night, as the Kenya Airport Workers Union (KAWU) started an indefinite strike at midnight. The protest is in response to the government’s plan to lease the airport to India’s Adani Group.
The government’s agreement with Adani Group would involve renovating the airport, building a new terminal and runway, and allowing the company to operate the airport for 30 years.
The Kenya Airport Workers Union has expressed concerns that the deal will result in job losses and worse working conditions for those who remain employed. KAWU Secretary General Moss Ndiema said, “The government has not been honest with us. They didn’t provide all the documents we requested. We just want the government to cancel the Adani deal.”
The protest caused major disruptions at the airport, with many travelers stuck in long lines, and flights both domestic and international were canceled.
JKIA handles over 8.8 million passengers annually but has faced problems like leaking roofs, power outages, and outdated facilities. Workers had previously threatened to strike last week but delayed action to hold discussions with the government.
Local media reported that the sight of unknown individuals taking notes and photos at the airport with officials raised concerns that preparations for the deal with Adani Group were underway.
On Monday, the High Court temporarily stopped the deal from going forward until a case filed by the Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission is heard.
