Kamala Harris Takes on Trump in First Campaign Rally

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris held her first campaign rally as the new Democratic presidential candidate on Tuesday, targeting Donald Trump and showing a slight lead over him in recent polls.

In a 17-minute speech, Harris criticized Trump, comparing her background as a former prosecutor to his record as a convicted felon. She highlighted her plans to expand abortion access, support union membership, and tackle gun violence, setting herself apart from Trump, the Republican nominee for the November 5 election.

Harris spoke to a crowd of several thousand at West Allis Central High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a crucial battleground state. She asked, “Do we want a country of freedom, compassion, and rule of law, or one of chaos, fear, and hate?”

Harris, is stepping into the role after Biden, 81, left the race under pressure from Democrats who doubted his ability to win or serve another term. The crowd cheered as Harris spoke, waving signs and chanting her name.

Harris emphasized her commitment to reproductive rights, an issue that has been contentious since the U.S. Supreme Court, with three justices appointed by Trump, ended the nationwide right to abortion in 2022.

Despite Trump’s efforts to link Harris to Biden’s unpopular policies, including handling the migrant surge at the southern border, Harris is gaining support. Trump has expressed confidence in defeating Harris, noting that her 2020 presidential run ended before the first statewide nominating contest. He has invited multiple debates with her, claiming she shares Biden’s policies.

Harris quickly secured the support of the Democratic Party after Biden’s departure. She won the majority of delegate pledges for the upcoming party convention and has raised $100 million since Sunday. Most Democratic lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have endorsed her.

Harris’s candidacy could reshape the election, as she would be the first woman elected U.S. president, in addition to being the first Black woman and Asian American to serve as vice president.

Biden announced he would give a speech on Wednesday night to explain his decision to end his campaign. He has returned to Washington after isolating with COVID-19. The White House doctor confirmed he tested negative and is symptom-free.

Biden’s exit followed Trump’s narrow escape from an assassination attempt on July 13, raising questions about Secret Service security. The agency’s director resigned on Tuesday. Reports suggest that Secret Service officials advised Trump’s campaign to avoid outdoor rallies, but neither the Secret Service nor the Trump campaign has commented.
