Kamala Harris Expresses Concern to Netanyahu Over Gaza War

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has promised not to stay quiet about the suffering in Gaza. She emphasized the plight of Palestinians while balancing her stance on the conflict, which divides her Democratic Party.

After meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on Thursday, Harris affirmed her strong support for Israel’s security but also expressed concern over the many innocent civilians killed in the war. She described the past nine months in Gaza as devastating, mentioning the images of dead children and desperate people seeking safety, often displaced multiple times. Harris insisted that we cannot ignore these tragedies and that she will not stay silent.

Harris, expected to be the Democratic nominee following President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek re-election, said she urged Netanyahu to accept a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal. She called for an end to the war in a way that ensures Israel’s security, the release of hostages, an end to Palestinian suffering, and the Palestinian right to freedom, dignity, and self-determination.

Harris reiterated her support for Israel’s right to defend itself, condemned Hamas as a brutal terrorist organization, and mentioned five U.S. citizens believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza and two others whose remains are thought to be there. She assured the families of these hostages that they are not alone and that she and President Biden are working daily to bring them home.

Acknowledging the complexity of the conflict, Harris noted that conversations often oversimplify the situation. While her remarks did not show major policy differences with Biden, her focus on Palestinian suffering contrasted with Biden’s more subtle efforts to control Israel. Biden’s policy on Gaza has upset progressive factions of the Democratic Party and many Muslim-Americans.

Despite positioning herself to the left of Biden during her 2020 presidential run, Harris has a history of strong support for Israel. Her first overseas trip as a senator in 2017 was to Israel, and she introduced a resolution opposing a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning the country. She also spoke at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s annual convention, affirming the unbreakable bonds between the U.S. and Israel.
