Japan Gymnastics Captain Faces Suspension for Smoking Violation

Japan’s women’s artistic gymnastics captain, Shoko Miyata, may be sent home from the Olympic Games for allegedly breaking a smoking ban, according to reports.

The Japan Gymnastics Association (JGA) is investigating the incident, putting Miyata’s participation in the Paris Olympics in doubt. Smoking violates the JGA’s code of conduct.

Miyata, 19, missed Wednesday’s open training session in Monaco, with the JGA’s head of development citing “certain reasons” for her absence, reported.

Miyata, a bronze medalist at the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool, will be interviewed by the JGA and her Juntendo University team upon her return to Japan.

Japan aims to win its first artistic gymnastics team medal since the 1964 Tokyo Games. The Paris Games begin on July 26.
