Instagram is changing its approach to how it works for teenagers by adding more safety features designed to protect young users and provide parents with better control. Starting Tuesday, new “teen accounts” will be launched in the UK, US, Canada, and Australia.
For users under 18, these accounts will automatically turn on several privacy settings. For example, teens’ content will be hidden from people who do not follow them, and they will need to approve all new followers.
Children aged 13 to 15 can only change these settings if they add a parent or guardian to their account.
Social media platforms are facing increased pressure worldwide to improve safety measures, especially to shield young people from harmful content. The UK children’s charity, NSPCC, praised Instagram’s changes as a “step in the right direction.” However, they emphasized that the responsibility shouldn’t fall solely on children and parents to stay safe.
Meta, Instagram’s parent company, calls these updates a “new experience for teens, guided by parents.” They believe the changes will help parents feel more at ease, knowing their teens have the right protections.
Moreover, accounts will be private by default, meaning teenagers will need to approve new followers, and their content will only be visible to people who follow them.
