The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is witnessing a significant increase in infertility cases, leading to a surge in couples seeking assistance from IVF clinics to overcome challenges related to low sperm count and ovarian reserve issues. According to a reports, the prevalence of infertility is on the rise in the UAE, prompting concerns among healthcare experts and researchers.
Luciano Nardo, the CEO and Founder of NOW-fertility, highlighted the escalating issue, stating, “Infertility is climbing in the UAE with a growing number of couples seeking fertility assistance.” Studies have indicated that approximately 15 percent of both men and women in the Middle East are facing infertility, which is higher than the global average of 10 percent.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported that, as of 2023, more than 17 percent of the world’s adult population, roughly one in six people globally, are grappling with infertility. This alarming figure underscores the magnitude of the health challenge at hand.
Nardo attributed several factors to the rising trend of couples seeking IVF treatments in the UAE. These include insufficient sun exposure leading to vitamin D deficiency, obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor dietary habits, and delayed marriages.
Statistics indicate that one in six couples in the UAE experiences difficulties conceiving, with the national fertility rate dropping from 2.7 births per woman in 2000 to 1.5 births per woman in 2020. The situation has been noted by experts at Dubai’s Orchid IVF Clinic, where an increasing number of couples are seeking fertility advice and treatment, according to Dr. Dimitrios Kafetzis, the clinic’s Medical Director.
Dr. Kafetzis pointed out that various factors contribute to the decline in fertility rates, including male and female fertility issues like low sperm count, decreasing ovarian reserves, and polycystic ovaries. Additionally, he highlighted a societal shift where adults are choosing to delay starting families.
While prioritizing careers is essential, Dr. Kafetzis stressed the significance of informing young people that having children in their early 20s can be ideal for both the parents’ and the baby’s health, as that is when the body is at its prime for reproduction.
He also emphasized the need for couples to be aware of the harmful impacts of smoking and alcohol on egg and sperm quality. Moreover, he expressed concern about a troubling trend among men, who are experiencing infertility due to the use of hormones in the gym to improve their physique.
Addressing the issue of male infertility, Dr. Kafetzis called for greater awareness and education about the potential consequences of unhealthy lifestyle choices and the importance of seeking medical advice when planning to have children.
