Heavy Fighting in Southern Gaza: Dozens Killed, Hundreds Wounded

At least 70 Palestinians have been killed and over 200 injured in the latest Israeli assault on Khan Younis in southern Gaza. The attacks involved tank shelling and airstrikes, creating what locals describe as a “doomsday” scenario.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health reported that the casualties include women and children. Residents of Khan Younis described Israeli tanks advancing over 2 kilometers into Bani Suheila, forcing many to flee under heavy fire. Medics confirmed that tank and air strikes hit multiple towns just east of Khan Younis.

The Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis is overwhelmed, with many injured being treated on the floor due to the high number of casualties. Medics called the situation “out of control.”

On Monday, the Israeli military ordered Palestinians in al-Mawasi, between Khan Younis and Rafah, to evacuate. Israel claims Palestinian fighters are using this area to launch attacks. The military urged people to move from eastern Khan Younis to the west of al-Mawasi, but many are reluctant due to a previous attack on the area that killed 92 people and injured over 300.

It was reported that conditions are worsening in Khan Younis, where people are forced to live in the ruins of their homes. The military’s bombardment began shortly after leaflets ordering evacuation were dropped.

Families are fleeing on donkey carts and on foot, carrying what belongings they can. International relief agencies and the UN state that there is no safe place left in Gaza. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society reported that two clinics in eastern Khan Younis have been put out of operation by the offensive.

Hamas condemned the attack, urging the international community and the UN to intervene and stop what it calls a “genocide.” According to Hamas, at least 39,006 Palestinians have been killed and 89,818 injured since Israel’s war on Gaza began in October.

The death toll in Israel from Hamas-led attacks on October 7 stands at 1,139, with dozens still held captive in Gaza.
