Google Photos rolls out new AI-powered editing features
Google Photos has unveiled a fresh wave of artificial intelligence–powered tools, significantly expanding its photo editing capabilities across mobile platforms. The update includes advanced object-removal features, enhanced customization options, and a redesigned photo editor for iOS users — marking one of the app’s most substantial upgrades in recent years.
Among the standout additions is a new ability that lets users remove or modify people and objects within photos with far greater accuracy than before. Powered by improved generative AI, the tool enables cleaner, more natural-looking edits, giving users greater control over what stays — and what disappears — in their images.
A newly introduced “Ask” button further enhances usability by allowing users to request edits through simple written prompts. Whether it’s brightening a scene, changing the sky, or adjusting facial expressions, the tool responds to natural-language instructions and generates the desired results automatically.
Google previously launched voice-guided photo editing on the Pixel 10 series, but the tech giant has now begun rolling it out to iPhone users in the United States, marking its first major cross-platform expansion of the feature.
Alongside the AI upgrades, Google Photos has also released a redesigned photo editor for iOS devices. The refreshed interface aims to improve user experience with cleaner navigation, more intuitive tool placement, and simplified access to advanced editing capabilities.
In a recent blog post, the company detailed its new “personalized editing” feature, which uses facial recognition to detect individuals in photos. Through the “Help Me Edit” option, users can make precise adjustments to each person in an image — including removing sunglasses, brightening faces, or even generating a smile. Each edit can be applied individually, adding more granular control to portrait editing.
The update also integrates Google’s new “Nano” AI image model, allowing users to transform their photos into a variety of artistic styles. From sketch-like renderings to bold, colorful textures, the model aims to offer creative reinterpretations of everyday images with a single tap.
Additionally, a new set of AI templates is being rolled out to help users quickly convert images into specific layouts or visual formats. This includes easy generation of posters, collages, story templates, or social media–ready designs without requiring manual adjustments.
According to Google, the latest features will debut in the United States and India before expanding to more regions in the coming months.
It is worth recalling that Google introduced AI-powered search enhancements within Google Photos last year for U.S. users — a move that greatly improved the app’s ability to identify people, objects, and scenes. The latest update builds on those foundations, pushing Google Photos deeper into the realm of intelligent, user-friendly photo editing.
