Gallup Survey Reveals Marriage Trends in Pakistan

A recent Gallup Pakistan survey conducted between June 28 and July 10, 2024, has provided a detailed look into the marital status and matchmaking practices of people in Pakistan. According to the survey, a significant majority—four out of every five Pakistanis, or 80%—are married, while 20% remain unmarried.

When participants were asked, “Are you married?” 80% of respondents confirmed that they were, with the married population being predominantly women, residents of rural areas, and those over the age of 50. Specifically, 75% of urban residents reported being married, compared to 83% in rural areas. Women were also found to be 12% more likely to be married than men.

The survey further broke down marital status by age group, revealing that 56% of individuals aged 30 or younger were married, with 44% unmarried. Among those aged 30 to 50, 91% were married, leaving just 9% unmarried. For those over 50 years old, a striking 96% were married, with only 4% remaining unmarried.

When asked about the duration of their marriages, the survey found that:

  • 17% had been married for 2 to 5 years,
  • 30% for 5 to 10 years,
  • 17% for 10 to 15 years,
  • 14% for 15 to 20 years,
  • 9% for 20 to 25 years,
  • 13% had been married for more than 25 years.

The survey also shed light on the prevailing trends in matchmaking. It revealed that most Pakistanis receive advice on finding a spouse from family members. When asked about their main source of guidance, 58% of respondents said they turned to their parents and siblings, while 26% sought advice from relatives, and 16% relied on friends. Only 7% of people sought help from professional matchmakers, with women being more likely to consult professionals than men—11% of women compared to 4% of men.

Interestingly, the survey highlighted that arranged marriages continue to dominate in Pakistan, with 81% of respondents indicating they had an arranged marriage. Among these, arranged marriages were more common among women, with 85% marrying according to their parents’ wishes, compared to 14% who had love marriages. Among men, 77% had arranged marriages, while 22% chose to marry for love.

In addition to these findings, Gallup Pakistan also explored the awareness and use of matrimonial services and digital matchmaking tools. The survey revealed that 30% of respondents had read matrimonial advertisements in newspapers, while 70% had not. Furthermore, when asked about their knowledge of relationship apps and online matchmaking websites, 25% acknowledged being aware of them, whereas 75% were unaware of such digital tools.

This comprehensive survey underscores the strong influence of family in the matchmaking process and highlights the enduring tradition of arranged marriages in Pakistan, even as awareness of modern digital matchmaking tools slowly grows.
