A fuel tanker collided head-on with another truck in Nigeria’s Niger state, leading to a massive explosion that killed at least 48 people, according to the country’s emergency response agency.
The tragic accident occurred in the Agaie area of north-central Niger state. The fuel tanker was also carrying cattle, and at least 50 of the animals were burned alive, said Abdullahi Baba-Arab, the director-general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, on Sunday.
Rescue teams were quickly sent to the scene to search for survivors and recover bodies. Initially, 30 bodies were found, but later, 18 more victims were discovered, all of whom were burned to death in the collision. Baba-Arab confirmed that the deceased had been given a mass burial.
Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago urged residents to stay calm and reminded road users to “always be cautious and follow traffic rules to protect lives and property.”
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, faces frequent truck accidents due to the lack of an efficient railway system for transporting goods.
