Former President Donald Trump made a public appearance with his new running mate, Sen. JD Vance, at the Republican National Convention on Monday night. This was Trump’s first public sighting since an attempt on his life on Saturday.
The crowd cheered as Trump appeared with a bandage on his ear, which had been grazed by a bullet at a rally in Pennsylvania. Over the weekend, Trump posted on social media that he had considered canceling his trip to Milwaukee but decided against it, stating that he wouldn’t let a “shooter” or potential assassin change his plans.
Trump’s appearance followed a dramatic weekend. On Saturday, a gunman opened fire at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing a bystander and critically wounding two others, as well as injuring Trump. Secret Service snipers shot and killed the gunman, identified as a 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania. The FBI and Secret Service are still investigating the motive behind the attack.
On Monday, Trump announced on social media that he had chosen 39-year-old Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate. Vance reportedly only found out about his selection 20 minutes before Trump made the public announcement.
Trump and Vance were officially nominated by the Republican National Convention on Monday. After the nomination, Vance, accompanied by his wife Usha, greeted the delegates.
Earlier on Monday, Trump received positive news when a federal judge in Florida dismissed charges against him and his two codefendants. The judge ruled that the special counsel Jack Smith’s appointment was unlawfully funded.
