The Cybercrime Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has begun an investigation into mobile applications (apps) that provide loans. This action comes after an unemployed man tragically took his own life because he was unable to repay the interest on a loan he had borrowed from one of these apps.
According to sources within the FIA, a resident of Rawalpindi committed suicide after allegedly being blackmailed by the operators of an online loan app. The Director General (DG) of the FIA, Mohsin Hasan Butt, took immediate notice of the incident and demanded a progress report from the Cyber Crime Wing. He also ordered the arrest of those involved in the case. As part of their investigation, the FIA team conducted raids on two offices of the loan app located in the G-8 sector. The offices were sealed, and laptops and other materials were confiscated as evidence.
Additionally, the FIA has reached out to the Security Exchange Commission to gather further information about the app company and has decided to block its online advertisements.
The DG has issued strict directives to take action against those who harass citizens under the pretext of loans. In response to a request from the victim’s relatives, the Cyber Crime Circle in Rawalpindi has launched an investigation into the incident. They are currently gathering records of calls and emails sent by the accused company to the victim, as well as information regarding the company’s ownership.
A spokesperson for the FIA stated that effective strategies would be developed in collaboration with stakeholders to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Citizens who experience harassment from loan apps are encouraged to visit the nearest cybercrime circle and file a complaint.
