On Thursday, rescue operations were completed at a pharmaceutical plant in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalli district, where an explosion the previous day claimed 17 lives and injured nearly 40 others, according to a senior state official.
The blast, which occurred at a 40-acre facility owned by privately held Escientia Advanced Sciences, marks the state’s deadliest industrial accident in recent years. Industries Secretary N. Yuvaraj confirmed that the rescue efforts have ended and that nearly 40 people were injured in the incident.
Escientia has yet to provide a comment regarding the recent incident. Officials suspect that the explosion resulted from a malfunction in a chemical reactor. Preliminary findings by Yuvaraj point to a vapor leak that likely triggered a chemical reaction, causing the blast. The chemical identified in the incident is methyl tert-butyl ether.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy through a post on X.
