EU Condemns Israeli Minister’s Comments on Gaza Starvation

The European Union has strongly condemned recent remarks made by Israel’s finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, suggesting that it might be justified to let civilians in Gaza starve to death.

Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, called these statements “beyond ignominious,” emphasizing that deliberate starvation of civilians is considered a war crime. Borrell criticized Smotrich for showing a disregard for international law and basic human principles.

The EU is urging the Israeli government to distance itself from these remarks and has called for transparency regarding reported acts of torture at Sde Teiman prison. Borrell also reiterated the EU’s demand for Israel to adhere to UN Security Council resolutions and International Court of Justice orders. This includes ensuring humanitarian access to Gaza, where many civilians, including children, are suffering from severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies.

Borrell has stressed the need for an immediate cease-fire, the release of all hostages, and a significant increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza, which started after a Hamas attack last October, has resulted in nearly 40,000 Palestinian deaths and over 91,000 injuries, according to local health authorities. Over 10 months of conflict have left large areas of Gaza in ruins.

Israel faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which has demanded an immediate halt to military operations in Rafah, where over 1 million Palestinians had sought refuge before the area was invaded in May.
