ECP Extends Voter Registration Deadline till July 23

Islamabad, June 24, 2023 – In a move to encourage citizen participation in the democratic process, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced an extension of the voters’ registration deadline for the forthcoming general elections until July 23. The ECP emphasized the significance of voter engagement and provided guidelines for obtaining voting information.

The Election Commission recognizes the vital role citizens play in shaping the democratic landscape of the country. Encouraging eligible individuals to exercise their right to vote is essential for a fair and inclusive electoral process. The extension of the registration deadline aims to facilitate maximum citizen participation and ensure a robust representation of the people’s voices in the upcoming elections.

Instructions for Obtaining Vote Information

Umar Hamid Khan, the Secretary of the Election Commission, urged citizens to visit the office of the District Election Commission for voter registration and verification. Alternatively, individuals can access the registration form on the Election Commission’s official website and fill it out online. By providing multiple avenues for voter registration, the ECP aims to accommodate the diverse preferences and convenience of the citizens.

Extension of Registration Deadline

The Election Commission has previously extended the registration deadline on multiple occasions to ensure that all eligible citizens have ample time to enrol themselves as voters. This proactive measure reflects the ECP’s commitment to facilitating the electoral process and ensuring that no eligible voter is left behind.

Acquiring Constituency Details via SMS Service

Citizens can easily obtain their constituency details and status by sending their National Identity Card (NIC) number via SMS to 8300. This convenient service allows individuals to access essential voter information without any hassle.

Guidelines for First-Time Voters

For those who are registering as voters for the first time, the ECP has outlined a straightforward process. New voters need to submit an application along with a copy of their CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card) to the District Election Commissioner (DEC), registration officer, or assistant registration officer in the desired electoral area.

Registration Process

The prescribed Form (Enrollment/Transfer of Vote) is available online on the ECP website. Alternatively, individuals can obtain the form free of cost from the office of the District Election Commissioner, Registration Officer, Assistant Registration Officer, or Display Centre charge. The availability of the form through various channels facilitates a smooth and accessible registration process for eligible citizens.

Eligibility Criteria for Voters

To be enrolled as a voter in an electoral area, an individual must meet certain eligibility criteria, which include being a citizen of Pakistan, being at least eighteen years of age, possessing a National Identity Card issued by the National Database and Registration Authority, not being declared of unsound mind by a competent court, and being a resident of the electoral area as per Section 27 or deemed to be one.

The extension of the voter registration deadline and the provision of clear instructions reflect the Election Commission’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and ensuring a fair electoral process. By simplifying the registration process and facilitating access to vote-related information, the ECP aims to empower citizens and encourage their active participation in shaping the country’s future through their votes.

Furthermore, the Election Commission is placing emphasis on the need for individuals to inspect and correct their voter details. Through regular inspection of electoral rolls, voters can ensure that their information is accurate and up to date. Any discrepancies or errors in their details can be rectified by contacting the District Election Commissioner or the relevant authorities. This proactive approach towards voter information verification ensures the integrity and accuracy of the electoral rolls, promoting transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

As the extended registration deadline allows more individuals to register as voters, it is expected that the upcoming general elections will witness increased citizen engagement, fostering a stronger democratic culture in Pakistan. The Election Commission remains dedicated to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections, where the voice of every eligible citizen is heard and counted.
