Cholera Outbreak in Sudan Affects Over 11,000 People Amid Heavy Rains

Sudan is facing a cholera outbreak that has infected more than 11,000 people and resulted in 348 deaths across nine states, according to the health ministry on Thursday. The outbreak started on August 12 and has worsened due to heavy rains and flooding, which create conditions for the disease to spread.

The worst-hit areas are in eastern Sudan, where a response campaign has reached 71% of the localities in Kassala and Wad Al-Hiliu.

Recently, 399 new cases and five additional deaths were reported in six states, including Kassala, River Nile, and Gedaref. The health ministry in River Nile state reported 3,000 cases and 71 deaths in its area.

Overall, the total number of cholera cases has reached 11,079. Additionally, 232 suspected cases of dengue fever have been reported, including two deaths.

The heavy rains and floods have impacted 70,000 families and over 300,000 people across 11 states. The health ministry also noted that about 80% of health facilities in conflict areas are not operational, leading to a severe shortage of medicines and medical supplies.
