Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Visit Russia and Belarus for Key Meetings

Chinese Premier Li Qiang is set to meet Russian leaders from August 20 to 23, following invitations from Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and also visit Belarusian to meet Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko. During this trip, Premier Li will co-chair the 29th regular meeting between Chinese and Russian heads of government and engage in discussions aimed at deepening bilateral relations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized during a press briefing on Monday that this regular meeting is a crucial mechanism for implementing agreements between the two countries’ presidents. It also plays a vital role in coordinating practical cooperation in areas like cultural and people-to-people exchanges. During his visit, Premier Li will join Russian Prime Minister Mishustin in leading the 29th regular meeting. The leaders are expected to discuss various topics, including bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and other important issues. Mao noted that China-Russia relations have remained strong and stable despite external challenges, guided by the strategic vision of both presidents.

In Belarus, Premier Li will hold talks with Prime Minister Golovchenko, focusing on bilateral relations and cooperation in different fields. The relationship between China and Belarus has seen steady growth in recent years, driven by the commitment of both presidents. This cooperation has led to increased political trust and significant achievements in Belt and Road projects, according to Mao.

Wan Qingsong, an expert at the Center for Russian Studies at East China Normal University, mentioned that this visit reflects efforts to implement agreements reached during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to China in May. Mao also highlighted that the meeting between Chinese and Russian heads of government, held annually since 1996, complements the leaders’ summits.

Cui Heng, a scholar from the China National Institute for SCO International Exchange and Judicial Cooperation in Shanghai, explained that the heads of government primarily focus on economic matters and the execution of cooperation projects. He added that Premier Li’s visit is expected to address a wide range of topics, further deepening and expanding bilateral cooperation between the countries.
