British army chief arrives in Pakistan on 5-day visit

  • On 5-day visit British army chief arrives in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: General Sir Patrick Sanders, the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) of the British Army, arrived in Pakistan on Monday for a five-day Defence Engagement visit, marking another milestone in the longstanding defence cooperation agreement between the two countries.

The visit of General Sanders holds significant importance as it reinforces the deep-rooted military relationship and friendship between the United Kingdom and Pakistan. This bond is strengthened by shared history and the presence of a vibrant diaspora, serving as a “living bridge” between the two nations.

The primary objective of General Sanders’ visit is to meet with General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of Pakistan, and engage in various Defence Engagement activities. Notably, the discussions will focus on enhancing bilateral military cooperation to effectively respond to climate change-related crises. Recognizing the urgent need to address environmental challenges, both countries aim to collaborate in developing strategies and frameworks to mitigate the impact of climate change on security.

One of the notable aspects of the existing defence relationship between Pakistan and the UK is the training opportunities provided to Pakistani officers. These include prestigious programs at the UK’s Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, the Advance Command and Staff Course, and the Royal College of Defence Studies. Such exchanges of knowledge and experiences contribute to the professional growth and development of Pakistani military personnel.

General Sanders’ visit holds particular significance in the context of the devastating floods that struck Pakistan almost a year ago. The calamity resulted in extensive damage, with nearly one-third of the country submerged and an estimated 33 million people affected. The UK’s Ministry of Defence played a crucial role in providing assistance for flood relief operations. At the request of Pakistan’s army chief, the UK airlifted eight boats and ten portable generators to support the rescue and relief efforts.

Earlier this year, COAS General Munir paid an official visit to the UK, where he participated in the 5th Pakistan-UK Stabilisation Conference from February 5 to 10. The conference, held bi-annually since 2016, serves as a platform for military-to-military cooperation between the two nations. The visit further strengthened the ties between the armed forces of Pakistan and the UK and fostered mutual understanding and collaboration in addressing common security challenges.

The Defence Engagement visit of General Sanders not only underscores the commitment of both countries to advancing their defence cooperation but also highlights their joint efforts in tackling global issues such as climate change and disaster response. As Pakistan and the UK continue to build on their robust military relationship, the exchange of expertise, training, and support will contribute to regional stability and security.
