Balochistan Honour Killing: Victim’s Mother Defends Murder, Urges Release of Tribal Chief

QUETTA – July 23, 2025: The mother of the woman brutally killed in a shocking Balochistan honour killing has publicly defended the act, calling it a matter of tribal tradition, and has demanded the release of tribal chieftain Sardar Sher Baz Satakzai, now among 14 suspects arrested.

In a video statement that has since gone viral, the mother of the slain woman, Bano, claimed her daughter was punished in line with “Balochi traditions” and insisted that Sardar Sher Baz had no role in the incident.

“This was our tribal custom. Sardar Sher Baz Satakzai is innocent and should be freed,” she said in the video, sparking outrage nationwide.

The statement comes just days after a graphic video surfaced on social media showing a man and a woman being gunned down in broad daylight. The disturbing footage was reportedly filmed during Eid al-Adha, allegedly in the Satakzai tribal region of Balochistan.

14 Suspects Arrested, Including Tribal Leader

So far, 14 people have been arrested, including the powerful head of the Satakzai tribe. The suspects are being held in connection with the viral double murder.

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti confirmed the arrests in a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), assuring the public that law enforcement is actively pursuing justice.

“Operations are ongoing. The state stands with the oppressed and will not allow such brutalities to go unpunished,” Bugti stated.

Prime Minister Orders Swift Probe

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the murder and demanded a thorough investigation. According to the PM Office, he spoke directly with CM Bugti and stressed the need for a transparent and immediate probe.

“Such heinous acts have no place in a civilized society. Justice must be served,” the PM said.

Public Outrage and Legal Response

The video has ignited widespread outrage across Pakistan and abroad, with human rights activists and civil society groups demanding strict action. Legal experts are also calling for the state to take firm control and ensure that tribal customs cannot override Pakistan’s constitutional laws.

While the mother’s video appears to justify the killings, critics argue that such public endorsements of honour killings further normalize violence against women in rural areas.

Background: The Culture of Honour Killings in Pakistan

Pakistan sees hundreds of honour killings each year, especially in conservative tribal regions where traditional customs often override national laws. Despite tougher penalties and growing awareness, enforcement remains weak, and victims are often denied justice.

The Balochistan honour killing case now serves as a stark reminder of the need for consistent legal enforcement and societal change.
