Asia Cup 2025 Pakistan vs India: Wasim Akram urges Pakistan, India to ignore noise and enjoy clash
DUBAI: Cricket legend Wasim Akram has called on players from Pakistan and India to shut out the noise and simply enjoy the game as the two arch-rivals gear up for their highly charged Asia Cup T20 showdown on Sunday.
The Group A clash in Dubai marks the first meeting between the two sides since a military conflict four months ago sent relations between the nuclear-armed neighbors to one of their lowest points in decades. Despite political tensions, India chose not to boycott the fixture, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated contests in world cricket.
“Enjoy, it’s a game of cricket,” Akram told , urging both teams to keep the focus on sport. “Forget about everything other than cricket. One team will win, and one team will lose. Pressure will come, but enjoy that and show discipline, because this is just a game.”
The iconic left-arm pacer, who tormented batsmen for nearly two decades, said the players must embrace the moment instead of being weighed down by external pressures. “Just enjoy the moment if you win the game. It’s for both teams and for both sets of fans.”
A capacity crowd of 25,000 is expected at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, with emotions running high on both sides. Akram, who thrived in such pressure matches during his career, recalled, “I enjoyed every game against India, and so did players from the opposition.”
The 59-year-old veteran, who led Pakistan’s tour of India in 1999 despite security threats, also reflected on past encounters, including the 1987 series when both nations were on the brink of war.
Advising the current Pakistan squad, Akram urged them to stay calm against world champions India. “Pakistan have a chance as they won a tri-series last week. They should not think that we just need to win against India. Think of winning the Asia Cup.”
He added that defeat should not demoralize the team if they continue to play positive cricket throughout the tournament. “You can lose to a big team, but even then, stand up and play well in the tournament.”
Commenting on India’s dominant start against UAE, Akram said fans should not expect Sunday’s game to be one-sided. “I don’t think the match will be like India against UAE. Anything can happen in this tournament.”
With both teams under immense scrutiny, the Asia Cup 2025 Pakistan-India clash promises high drama, unforgettable moments, and, as Akram insists, an opportunity to celebrate cricket beyond politics.
