The University of Leicester in the United Kingdom has led a recent study that highpoints the influence of air pollution on the microbiome surrounding us. This research is particularly relevant given the global decline in bee populations, and scientists are investigating whether there’s a connection between the two. A team led by Professor Morrissey, at the University of Leicester is exploring the possible link between air contamination and declining bees’ populations. Dr. Hannah Sampson, the lead author of this study, suggests that constant exposure bees to air contamination might be linked to global decline in bees’ populations.

The scientists are examining how air pollution affects the bee’s gut microbiome and its bacterial balance, eventually impacting the bee’s health. Dr. H. Sampson, exposed Snodgrassella alvi, that it is a beneficial bacteria in the bee’s gut, to black carbon air pollution in the laboratory & found that it changed the behavior of bacteria and structure of its biofilm. The scientists also observed a noteworthy change in the abundance of two beneficial bacteria in live bumble bees’ gut after contact to black carbon.
