ACC Approves Hybrid Model: Asia Cup 2023 to be Held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has finally announced the schedule for the much-anticipated Asia Cup 2023, ending the stalemate over the tournament’s hosting. The ACC has accepted Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) proposed hybrid model, which will see four matches played in Pakistan and the remaining nine matches held in Sri Lanka. The decision comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed its unwillingness to travel to Pakistan due to strained political relations. While the detailed schedule is yet to be released, the confirmed dates for the tournament are August 31 to September 17.

Asia Cup 2023: A Hybrid Model Accepted:

After prolonged discussions and negotiations, the ACC has accepted the hybrid model presented by the PCB for the Asia Cup 2023. This decision marks a significant moment, as it will be the first time in 15 years that matches of a multi-nation cricket tournament will be staged in Pakistan. The PCB‘s proposal ensures that part of the tournament will be played in Pakistan, satisfying the desires of the appointed hosts, while Sri Lanka will serve as the neutral venue for the remaining matches.

Acknowledgment from PCB:

Najam Sethi, Chairperson of the PCB Management Committee, expressed his elation at the ACC’s acceptance of the hybrid model. He thanked the ACC for their decision and acknowledged the BCCI’s position, understanding the need for government approval and clearance before crossing borders. Sethi emphasized that the hybrid model was the best solution in the given circumstances, allowing the event to proceed as planned while keeping the ACC united. He anticipated exciting times ahead for cricket fans in the subcontinent.

Asia Cup Format and Participating Teams:

The Asia Cup 2023 will feature six elite teams from the subcontinent, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal. The tournament will follow a group stage format, with Group 1 consisting of Pakistan, India, and Nepal, and Group 2 comprising defending champions Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Two teams from each group will qualify for the Super Four stage, where the top two teams will advance to the final. The matches will be played in the 50-over format, serving as valuable preparation for the ODI World Cup scheduled in India later this year.

Resolving the India-Pakistan Impasse:

The hybrid model became necessary after the BCCI declined to send the Indian cricket team to Pakistan due to strained political relations between the two countries. The decision aims to strike a balance between hosting matches in Pakistan and accommodating India’s concerns. While the PCB desired to hold the entire tournament in Pakistan, the hybrid model ensures that a significant portion of the event will be hosted in the country. The UAE was considered as a neutral venue, but concerns were raised about extreme weather conditions in September, leading to the choice of Sri Lanka as the alternative venue.

The tournament promises to provide thrilling encounters and fierce competition among the top cricketing nations in the subcontinent.
