KARACHI: Dr Birbal Genani, a former senior director of health at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and an eye specialist, was shot and killed by unknown assailants in the port city on Thursday night.
According to the police, Dr Genani and his assistant were driving from Ramswamy to Gulshan-e-Iqbal when they were attacked by armed men near the Garden interchange on the Lyari Expressway. Dr Genani died on the spot, while his assistant sustained bullet injuries.
The police and rescue officials responded promptly to the incident, moving the deceased’s body and the injured to the hospital. CCTV footage of the incident showed Dr Genani’s vehicle colliding with a wall after being attacked.
The police have classified the murder as a targeted killing and are investigating the incident. Taking notice of the incident, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori sought a report from police high-ups. He also directed the additional inspector general of Karachi police to submit him the detailed report. He expressed condolences over the gruesome murder of the Dr Genani.
