ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Tuesday ordered the taxpayers who are earning more than Rs150 million to pay super tax amounting to 50%.
A two-member bench headed Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial heard the case regarding super tax.
During the today’s hearing, the lawyer appeared on the behalf of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) said that super tax had been imposed on high income earners by changing the Income Tax Ordinance.
On which, the apex court ordered the taxpayers who are earning Rs150 million to submit the super tax within two-week time.
CJP Umar Ata Bandial said that the FBR should develop a trust with the taxpayers. “If the FBR expands its tax net, it will be able to win over the trust of taxpayers,” the top court opined.
On February 17, 2023, the apex court ordered large-scale manufacturing industries to pay 4% super tax.
Three-member apex court bench including CJP Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ayesha A Malik and Justice Athar Minallah heard the case.
The petition was filed by the government and the FBR on the matter.
Earlier, the Sindh High Court (SHC) had stopped the government from charging the super tax for the year 2022. The court termed the government decision “discriminatory” and “ultra vires to the Constitution”.
After the SHC order, the federal government and FBR had challenged its decision in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Last year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had imposed a 10% super tax on large-scale industries.
