- The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) has called general house meeting to deliberate on the subject matter while SCBA President Zubari has termed ECP’s decision as contempt of court.
Lahore: The lawyers’ bodies including Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) against the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to postpone the election general elections of Punjab from April 30 to Oct 8.
SCBA President Abid Shahid Zuberi expressed surprise over the ECP’s decision to postpone elections in Punjab, saying that it is clear violation of the Constitution.
“This is not just violation of the Constitution but contempt of the court as the ECP is bound to hold elections within 90 days in light of the Supreme Court orders,” said Zuberi while talking to TV on Thursday night.
The latest reports said that the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) summoned its general house meeting on Friday (today) to deliberate on the decision of the ECP to postpone the elections in Punjab.
The lawyers are likely to show huge resistance against the ECP’s decision regarding the date for Punjab polls.
Lahore Bar Association, the country’s one of the top bars, issued a statement on Thursday and declared ECP’s decision as an act of constitutional deviation and contempt of clear direction from Hon’ble Supreme Court.
The bar held a meeting with President Rana Intezar Hussain in the chair and unanimously declared that the ECP through its act deviated from the Constitution and is clear contempt of the court as it violated the top court’s directions.
In its statement, the bar categorically said that it would uphold the dictates of the Constitution and supremacy of the law at all costs.
The reaction started pouring in on the traditional and social media a day after the electoral body postponed the date of Punjab elections from April 30 to Oct 8.
Besides the bar’s reaction, the PTI leaders would also challenge the ECP’s decision before the top court today.
