Former VJ and actor Anusha Dandekar recently underwent surgery to remove ovarian lumps, prompting her to raise awareness about the condition and encourage women to prioritize their reproductive health. Dandekar shared her experience on Instagram, expressing gratitude to her medical team for successfully removing all the lumps from her ovary.
Dr. Nivedita Jha, a consultant obstetrician, and gynecologist at Apollo Cradle and Children’s Hospital in Bangalore’s Koramangala, emphasized that anyone, regardless of family history or health conditions, can develop ovarian cysts or cancer. Regular check-ups and preventive measures are crucial to maintaining reproductive health.
Ovarian cysts also referred to as lumps, are fluid-filled sacs that form within or on the surface of the ovaries. While some cysts are considered normal, they can be categorized into benign and malignant types. Benign cysts are generally harmless, but malignant ones have the potential to become cancerous.
Dr. Jha explained that most cysts found in individuals below the age of 50, before menopause, are benign. However, it is essential to monitor and address even benign cysts, as they can cause significant pain and discomfort. Laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive procedure, is often employed to remove such cysts.
Both pre and post-menopausal women may experience symptoms such as pelvic pain, vomiting, and abnormal bleeding due to cysts. Dr. Jha advised seeking immediate medical attention in case of abnormal bleeding. To monitor the reproductive system, she recommended annual pelvic and breast ultrasounds for women above the age of 25, particularly those with a family history of reproductive organ cancers or other related conditions.
Early detection through routine ultrasounds is vital in combating ovarian cancer and related complications. Dr. Jha emphasized the importance of staying proactive and taking preventive measures to safeguard women’s reproductive health.
