Maryam Nawaz to contest elections from Gujranwala, Lahore constituencies

Lahore:  Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior vice president Maryam Nawaz would contest upcoming elections for Punjab Assembly from Gujranwala and Lahore, the latest reports said on Thursday.

Maryam Nawaz would contest elections from PP-63, Gujranwala, and from three other constituencies of Lahore including PP-149, PP-153 and PP-173.

A local private TV reported that the PML-N senior vice-president handed over her nomination papers to Gujranawala Vice-President Shoaib Butt to submit the same before the Returning Officer’s (RO) office. The lawyer of Shoaib Butt would submit the nomination papers on Friday (tomorrow).

“We will submit Maryam Nawaz’s nomination papers to the RO on Friday,” Shoaib Butt was quoted as saying.

Ashraf Ansari, the incumbent PML-N leader, was elected as MPA in the last general elections of 2018 from the same constituency of Gujranwala.

Maryam Nawaz’s cousin and former Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz would contest the general elections for the provincial assembly from three different constituencies of Lahore.

He had recently returned to Pakistan from his foreign tours.

The Election Commission of Pakistan earlier had set April 30 as the date for general elections in Punjab.  The candidates, under the schedule, were supposed to submit their nomination papers from March 12 to 14 while scrutiny of the papers would be held on March 22.

The ECP had set April 5 as the date for withdrawal of the nomination papers and April 6 for allocation of the electoral symbols.
