Director Homi Adajania shuts down Deepika Padukone’s ‘Cocktail’ sequel rumors

Director Homi Adajania rules out a sequel to “Cocktail” but hints at future collaboration with Deepika Padukone

“Cocktail”, the 2012 Bollywood romantic comedy-drama directed by Homi Adajania, remains a beloved film among fans of the genre and the cast. Starring Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan, and Diana Penty in lead roles, “Cocktail” tells the story of a free-spirited girl, a brooding man, and an innocent girl caught in a love triangle in London and India. The film was a commercial success and received positive reviews for its fresh take on relationships, music, and style.

Recently, rumors about a possible sequel to “Cocktail” surfaced on social media and sparked curiosity among fans who wanted to know more about the project. However, in a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Homi Adajania dispelled the rumors and said that he had no plans to make a sequel to “Cocktail” or any of his previous films. The reason, he said, was that he didn’t want to repeat himself or do something that he could easily do.

Adajania stated that he is not interested in doing something that he can already do. He explained that his filmography is quite diverse, and different films seem like they were made by different people, such as ‘Angrezi Medium’, ‘Being Cyrus’, ‘Cocktail’, ‘Finding Fanny’, and ‘Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo’. He expressed his love for this aspect of his work.

Adajania’s comment reflects his creative philosophy of exploring different themes, genres, and styles in his films and avoiding repetition or formulaic storytelling. He added that he loved to challenge himself and do things that scared him, which explained his diverse filmography and his upcoming project, a web series called “Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo”, which is a satirical take on the Indian soap opera culture.

However, Adajania also praised the talent and versatility of Deepika Padukone, who played the role of Veronica, a bold and charismatic woman in “Cocktail” and received critical acclaim for her performance. When asked if he would like to collaborate with Deepika Padukone again, Adajania said that he would be happy to do so if they found the right material and context for their collaboration.

According to Adajania, they haven’t talked about it yet, but he expressed his desire to work with Deepika Padukone again in the future. He acknowledged her immense talent and added that they would collaborate only when they have a suitable project that allows them to optimize their abilities and produce something exceptional.

Deepika Padukone and Adajania have previously worked together in two other films, “Finding Fanny” (2014) and “Angrezi Medium” (2020), both of which received mixed reviews and moderate box office success. However, their collaboration in “Cocktail” remains their most memorable and successful project, and fans have been eagerly waiting for them to reunite on screen.

Adajania’s comment also reflects the importance of the script and the chemistry between the actors in making a successful film, rather than relying on the brand value or the fan following of the stars. Adajania is known for his unconventional approach to filmmaking, and his films often have a quirky or offbeat tone that challenges the audience’s expectations.
