5 Indian soldiers killed in occupied Kashmir

Recently, an operation by Indian defence forces in the Rajouri sector of Kashmir resulted in the loss of lives of five soldiers, while several others were injured. The operation was carried out to combat armed groups in the region after unidentified shooters had opened fire on an Indian army vehicle, leading to the death of five soldiers in the previous month.

According to an official statement by the army, a search team discovered a group of fighters trapped in a densely vegetated and rocky area on Friday. In response to the search team’s discovery, the terrorists triggered an explosive device, killing two soldiers in the attack, while three others succumbed to their injuries later in the day.

Kashmir, a region claimed in full but ruled in part by nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan, has witnessed a bloody armed rebellion against New Delhi since the 1990s. The Indian government has struggled for decades to quell secessionist sentiments in the region, which had been its only Muslim-majority state until August 2019, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi abolished Article 370 of the constitution. The move ended the region’s autonomy, removed its statehood, and divided Indian-administered Kashmir into the two federal territories of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Ladakh.

The conflict in Kashmir has persisted for decades, with both India and Pakistan claiming the territory. While the Indian government has attempted to suppress separatist movements in the region, these efforts have frequently resulted in violent clashes between Indian security forces and militants. Despite the Indian government’s claims of attempting to maintain law and order, human rights organizations have accused the government of using excessive force against civilians.

The current situation in Kashmir remains volatile, with regular reports of violence and clashes between Indian security forces and militants. The deaths of the five soldiers in the latest operation are likely to further exacerbate tensions in the region. Although the Indian government has pledged to continue its operations against militants in the area, it is uncertain when stability will be restored to the region.
