KARACHI: The government of Sindh has made the decision to combat crime by implementing automatic numberplate recognition cameras (ANPR) at toll plaza entry and exit points across the province.
The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, with attendance from several government officials. The cameras will capture photos of number plates and passengers in the front seats, read the number plates, and use facial recognition technology to identify passengers.
The footage will be sent to a central monitoring room in real-time to help prevent and detect crimes. The project will cost Rs1.57 billion, and the chief minister has offered to arrange funds after the cabinet’s approval. The cabinet also decided to cap reward money for arresting or killing criminals involved in heinous crimes to Rs10 million, with rewards of Rs500,000 for murder and kidnapping for ransom cases and Rs200,000 for dacoities and police encounters.
