SBP clears air about demonetisation of Rs75 banknote

ISLAMABAD: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has dispelled rumours about the demonetisation of the Rs75 commemorative banknote, clarifying that it has the same legal status as other currency notes.

SBP’s spokesperson Abid Qamar, in a video message posted on the central bank’s official Twitter handle, stated that the commemorative banknote was issued last year to celebrate the country’s 75th anniversary of independence.

Qamar added that the SBP issues all currency notes under Section 25 of its Act, and that the Rs75 commemorative banknote is legal tender that can be used in all transactions. He emphasized that there is no truth to rumours claiming that the government has discontinued or withdrawn the banknote, and that it has no expiration date.

It is noteworthy that during Eid ul Fitr, shopkeepers in many parts of the country refused to accept Rs75 notes, which sparked rumours about the banknote’s demonetisation. SBP’s clarification should put an end to any confusion or concern regarding the Rs75 commemorative banknote’s validity as legal tender.

The SBP’s statement reinforces the importance of factual information and dispelling rumours in ensuring public confidence and trust in the currency system. The SBP’s proactive response to this issue sets an excellent example of responsible communication in maintaining financial stability and public trust.
