Rahul Gandhi, the prominent opposition leader in India, has taken the opportunity of his visit to the United States to criticize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of several key issues, including the country’s relations with China and religious polarization. Speaking at The National Press Club in Washington, Gandhi made strong statements regarding these concerns, highlighting his disagreement with Modi’s approach.
Gandhi asserted that China’s occupation of Indian territory is an undeniable reality, contradicting the Prime Minister’s stance on the matter. Referring to the longstanding border dispute between the two nations, Gandhi emphasized the need to address this issue promptly. The Congress party member called the situation “completely unacceptable” and emphasized the importance of acknowledging the truth.
The Indian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Gandhi’s remarks. Nevertheless, his criticisms come just weeks before Modi’s scheduled visit to the United States later this month, making his statements particularly significant.
Tensions between China and India have persisted for decades, particularly after the clashes along their disputed Himalayan border in 2020 that resulted in casualties on both sides. China further escalated the situation this year by renaming 11 locations in India’s Arunachal Pradesh, an eastern state that China claims as its own. India has vehemently denied these claims.
Prime Minister Modi has emphasized the necessity of peace on the border for normalizing relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. His administration has invested substantial resources in bolstering military and civilian infrastructure along India’s extensive border with China. However, Gandhi’s criticisms highlight the need for a more comprehensive and effective strategy in dealing with the ongoing territorial dispute.
Beyond the issue of India-China relations, Rahul Gandhi also criticized Modi’s party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), for its alleged religious polarisation and lack of inclusivity. According to Gandhi, the BJP fosters societal division and animosity, failing to embrace the diversity of Indian society. The opposition leader expressed concern over the BJP’s policies and their impact on social harmony.
The BJP, on the other hand, has strongly refuted these claims and argues that its programs aim to benefit all Indians and promote national development. The party insists that it embraces the principles of inclusivity and denies any intent to polarize society along religious lines.
Gandhi also accused the BJP of exerting control over institutions and the press in India. He claimed that the government’s actions have led to a decline in press freedom, citing the country’s drop in rankings on the World Press Freedom Index since Modi assumed office in 2014. India has slipped from 140th to 161st place on the index, according to the Reporters Without Borders’ annual ranking.
In response, the BJP defends its commitment to the rule of law and rejects any allegations of compromising institutions. The party maintains that its administration adheres to democratic principles and respects the freedom of the press.
