Nawaz Sharif asks PDM leaders to hold power show outside SC

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Supremo and former three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday asked the leaders of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) to hold a power show outside the Supreme Court (SC).

The source privy to the development said that Nawaz Sharif expressed disappointment over the top court’s verdict regarding release of PTI Chairman Imran Khan.  He took part in the PDM meeting via video link from London.

PDM Chief and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam head Maualana Fazlur Rehman chaired the meeting.

The sources said that the PDM leaders, however, expressed concerns that there could be confrontation outside the Supreme Court if they held the protests.  They said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman called Imran Khan ‘criminal’ and criticized the judiciary for what he said ‘protection to Imran Khan’.

Prime Minister Shehbaz had earlier termed the court’s decision “NRO” to Imran Khan, saying that he was released in an clear case of corruption. Imran Niazi, the PM said, committed corruption of Rs60b but he was protected.

Later, the federal cabinet held meeting to mull over the options and the prevailing political and legal challenges. The sources said that the coalition government also consulted the law officers on the matters pertaining to Imran Khan.

The cabinet members had earlier asked the Prime Minister to impose emergency in the country to deal with the situation arising out of the latest events.

The sources claimed that the federal cabinet also discussed the decisions of the courts and reviewed the recommendations of extending assemblies’ tenure.

The development took place after the Islamabad High Court provided blanket relief to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan by granting him bail in all the cases registered against him. The court directed the government authorities to ensure foolproof security of the PTI chief.

Pakistan Rangers arrested Imran Khan on the orders of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Al-Qadir Trust case from the premises of the Islamabad High Court on May 9. The arrest of Imran Khan sparked countrywide protests, and the protesters damaged public and private properties in different parts of the country.
