KARACHI: The officials of the Customs Department foiled a bid to smuggle illegal mobile phones and liquor at the Karachi airport on Tuesday.
Spokesman for the Customs Department Syed Irfan Ali informed the media that the smuggling attempt was foiled when the customs personnel asked a passenger (Shehryar Amjad Butt) to stop on suspicion. Butt arrived in the port city from Dubai on Emirates airlines.
The passenger was interrogated. Later, on during the scanning, mobile phones and liquor were discovered from his luggage, Ali said.
The spokesman for the Customs Department said that 68 iPhones, 212 packets of food supplements and 8 liquor bottles were confiscated from him. The smuggling luggage was worth of more than Rs10 million.
Ali said that the passenger was trying to smuggle these items to avoid the taxes.
At the end, the passenger was arrested and a case was lodged under the Customs Act.
